QuiltCon Quilt Show Categories

The QuiltCon quilt show will feature more than $10,000 in cash prizes. The quilt show features new categories such as Improvisation, Minimalist Design, Use of Negative Space and Modern Traditionalism in addition to the more traditional categories of Applique, Handwork and Piecing. Below are examples of these categories.

There are several categories in which quilts can be entered. The broad distinctions are based on size, with two different groupings.

  • Large Quilts that measure more than 36 inches per side.
  • Small Quilts that measure 36 inches or less per side.

Entrants are welcome to enter as many quilts as they would like, however are limited to one quilt per category.


Quilts that include either machine or hand layering of fabric where the quilt’s focus is applique.

Quilts that includes at least one element of handwork including, but not limited to hand piecing, hand quilting, embroidery, red-work, cross stitch, crewel, etc. (Hand stitched binding does not qualify as handwork.)

The design of the quilt expresses the principles of minimalism including one or more of the following traits, simplicity, clarity of focus, singleness, and use of large forms.

Quilt design incorporates a significant use of negative space which organizes the composition of the quilt.
