Alexis’s quilt, Flight is the is the featured quilt for the Week of Color Tutorial Round Up. We’re sharing tutorials from generous quilters around the web that will help you make your own color filled quilts.
Alexis’s thoughts on color:
The choice of colors for this quilt was partly planning and partly serendipity. I had planned to use only solids, with a palette inspired by the muted but vibrant tones of Amish quilts, which are a major source of inspiration in my work.
I started with the idea of using burgundy and bright red with aqua, which, though not technically complementary colors, have a similar effect in that each enhances the intensity and character of the other. Adding in some crossweaves and crosshatch prints for additional visual richness was a last minute, spur of the moment idea.
In my quilting, I like to draw on my visual arts background and use color–in conjunction with composition–to create movement and add points of interest. I draw upon color theory to achieve this — for example, by using complementary colors or a warm-cool contrast, both of which I did in this quilt. I also like to use color to create compositional interest. In this quilt, I added some unexpected red and orange triangles to the blue and grey sections, and did the reverse in the single column of red and orange geese.
